During the installation, Avast offers to install the Avast Secure browser, it is personal, secure and fast. By default, this makes it your default browser. The installer presents a complete page explaining how Avast uses your unreasonable data and how you can opt-out if you wish. The largest part of the Avast main window is a slate-gray rectangle with some textures, a status icon and a large button titled Run Smart Scan. The left-rail menu lets you switch from the main status page to Security, Privacy or Performance. Across the bottom, you find a banner giving you a welcome gift. The virtual gift unwrapped reveals a discounted upgrade to Avast Premium Security. If you refuse the upgrade, it offers a 60-day trial. Avast really wants you to experience the suite!
Lab Scores High and Plentiful
This may seem counterintuitive, but antivirus manufacturers usually pay for the convenience of having the products included in the test by independent labs. Companies benefit from testing in two ways. A high score gives the company arrogant rights. If the score is poor, the company can improve by checking what went wrong. When antivirus does not generate any revenue, a company may be persuaded to deduct the cost of testing. Not Avast.
